A chilly February morning was quickly warmed with the excitement of over 60 paddleboarders taking to the water from the docks of Paddleboard New Smyrna Beach for Race One of the Mayor’s Riverfest.
Racers, ranging in age from 11 to 70, competed for metals and bragging rights. Race Director Erik Lumbert expects that number to grow substantially for race two scheduled for March 16, 2013.
Race two will have a similar format featuring a short and a long course, but both courses are being altered to keep things interesting for returning racers.
Mayor Adam Barringer remarked, “Events like this just open up our beautiful waterways for more enjoyment year round. It’s really great seeing the community rallying behind an exciting and healthy way to enjoy the outdoors.” Barringer further committed to not only be in attendance for race two, but to participate as well.
All skill levels are encouraged to attend as the short race is suitable for new or even first time paddleboards. The long course is set to provide more of a challenge for experienced paddlers or those looking to hone their skills.
The first 60 people to pre-register will receive a discount on their race fee, a St. Patty’s Day lunch and entry prize. Numerous other prizes, raffles and giveaways will take place on race day as well.
The pre-registration cost is $29 for the short course and $39 for the long course. To sign up with pre-registration discount please contact Erik Lumbert at 386-530-3868 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
