Board of Realtors Supports Local Schools
On August 1st, the New Smyrna Beach Board of Realtors (NSB BOR) presented a check for $6,750 to Dr. Margaret Smith, Volusia County School Superintendent, to be distributed to local schools for supplies.
In the past, members of the NSB BOR were given a generic school supply list. The supplies were collected and then donated to each school. This year is unique as they are donating money directly to each school.
“After meeting with nine local school representatives, each school has different needs. By donating the cash, they can purchase whatever their needs may be,” stated Wendy Evans with Pillar to Post Home Inspections and member of the NSB BOR Special Events Committee. The schools will be held accountable by reporting their spending.
Each year, the tournament is organized by the NSB BOR Special Events Committee, a committee dedicated to planning fundraising for all the charity events the NSB BOR participates in throughout the year. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament goes towards the purchase of the school supplies for public schools in Southeast Volusia County.
A representative from each of the nine local schools receiving the donations includes Coronado Beach Elementary, Chisholm Elementary, Indian River Elementary, Edgewater Public Elementary, Read-Patillo Elementary, Samsula Elementary, New Smyrna Beach Middle, New Smyrna Beach High and Burns Science and Technology Charter School.
Another great need in the local school system is paper. On average, a teacher can spend up to $2,000, out of pocket, a year on paper. The NSB BOR helped by encouraging the community to donate as much paper as possible.
The paper donations were presented to the local school representatives at the August 1st NSB BOR meeting.
The NSB BOR is comprised of 250 local Realtors and business affiliates. The Special Events Committee are members within the NSB BOR who volunteer their time to plan special fundraising events.
Other charity events include donating food baskets at Thanksgiving to over 200 needy families in the community.
