Beekeeping for Beginners @ Edgewater Public Library
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Edgewater Public LibraryEdgewater Public Library is partnering with Master Beekeeper Marlin Athearn to offer three educational programs in April and May for those who are just starting out in the hobby of beekeeping.

There is no charge and each class will last about an hour. The course is limited to 75 participants and reservations are required. Please call Edgewater Public Library to reserve a place.

The first session is Beekeeping for Beginners,” offering general information for new beekeepers. The second class will focus onHoney Bee Biology and Botany,” including what kinds of plants bees prefer. The final session in May is called How to Attract Florida Native Bees to Your Garden.” For this class, Athearn will discuss different types of bees in the state and explain how to provide the right habitat for them.
Athearn is a physical education teacher at River Springs Middle School in Orange City, and also owns South Of The Mouth Dive Services in New Smyrna Beach. He and his wife, Donna, sell honey and related products from Athearn’s own bee hives each Saturday, 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in their booth at the New Smyrna Beach Farmers Market.
Athearn earned the title of Master Beekeeper in March this year after he successfully completed the University of Florida’s Certified Master Beekeeper program at the UF Bee College located at Whitney Laboratory, Marineland. He is one of only 21 people in Florida to gain this beekeeper certification.
The Bee College was organized and created seven years ago by Dr. Jamie Ellis, Director of the University of Florida Honey Bee Extension Laboratory. Course requirements to become certified as a Master Beekeeper include serving for one year as a registered beekeeper with the state, passing a two-hour written exam and successfully completing a two-hour, hands-on practical exam to first become an Apprentice Beekeeper.
Next, Athearn completed another two years as a state-registered beekeeper, earned more public service credits for special events relating to beekeeping, and passed additional testing and practical demonstrations to qualify for the Bee College title of Advanced Beekeeper of The Year. Successfully finishing a higher level of course work earned him the Master Beekeeper certification. Now, Athearn intends to continue working toward earning the Bee College’s top level of certification as a Master Craftsman in Beekeeping.

To commemorate the event, city officials will participate in a ground breaking ceremony at the construction site complete with hard hats, shovels and a sampling tent with hot and iced coffee and donuts.

The new restaurant is the third green Dunkin’ Donuts in the country – all of which are in Florida – and will be designed and constructed to meet LEED Certification standards. The new restaurant, which will be relocated from the existing Dunkin’ Donuts location in the same shopping center, will feature numerous green attributes including energy efficient LED lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, healthy interior finishes, a rainwater harvesting system and many other features focused on improving the building efficiency, providing a healthy indoor air environment for customers and employees, and reducing its environmental impact.

LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is widely recognized as the standard for “green” construction in the United States. The certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
