Relay for Life @ Riverside Park
5:00 PM – Saturday @ 8:00 AM

In the fight against cancer, silence is the last thing we need. Your local American Cancer Society Relay For Life event is a great place to take action and make noise. The Relay For Life movement features community and campus events that offer an inspiring opportunity to honor cancer survivors, promote how individuals can reduce their cancer risk, and raise money to help end cancer. Today, with the support of thousands of volunteers, the American Cancer Society is helping save more than 400 lives a day. And we won’t stop until we finish the fight against cancer!

American Legion Post 286 will post the Colors followed by Gina Cuchetti singing the National Anthem.  Guest speakers will be Steve Harrell, CEO of Bert Fish Medical Center and State Representative Dave Hood.

Cancer survivors will take center stage on Friday, April 25, 2014 when they will be recognized for their personal battle against various cancers during the 14th Annual Southeast Volusia Relay For Life.  As each crosses the stage in Riverside Park in New Smyrna Beach at 6:00 they will receive a medallion provided by local Oncologists, Doctors Gregory Favis and Joyce Battle.  Then all will take the first LAP around the “track” lead by Cancer Survivor Torch Bearer, Terri Pimental.  Survivors and their care-givers will then be treated to a meal, compliments of Settle-Wilder Funeral Home and the Angler’s Yacht Club.

Relay For Life is a n American Cancer Society signature event held annually nationally and internationally with the focus on Cancer Survivors and those who fought the battle bravely.  Luminaries will line the track with the names of many of those individuals.  Forms are available at Bert Fish Oncology Department and will be available at the event where members of Oceanside Woman’s Club will be manning the table and helping with orders.

Following the Survivors’ lap, the fun, games and entertainment continue throughout the night.  Dick Conti will begin the entertainment with lots of “Mardi Gras type music on his trumpet.  Later, Big Tom will take over providing music all night.  Participants will have an opportunity to show off their talent during the talent show.  Lots of games are planned and the themed laps will be Best Mask, Crazy Hat and All That Jazz.  Closing ceremonies begin at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
