Karen Collins, a real coal miner’s daughter, will perform country classics, holiday music and original compositions.
Collins, who has released three CDs with the Backroads Band, describes herself as a traditional country singer in the old-school style of Loretta Lynn and Hazel Dickens.
She grew up in rural southwest Virginia, where she listened to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio, sang hymns in church, and cultivated a deep appreciation for lyrics and harmony.
“I traded a white knit dress for my friend’s beat-up guitar,” she wrote on her website. “She got the best end of the deal. I finally had a guitar, but it was close to unplayable with steel strings that cut into my fingers. Eventually, Mom saved up enough S&H stamps to get me a slightly better “Green Stamp” guitar that made it easier to strum and sing along with records. Fresh out of college, I took my first paycheck and marched to the local music store to put down a deposit on a guitar that was easier on my fingers and sounded half-way decent.”
The free concert is sponsored by the Friends of the New Smyrna Beach Library.
The library is open seven days a week. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
