Mayor’s Fitness Challenge Kickoff @ Brannon Center

mayors fitness challengeResidents who want to ensure success with their healthy 2014 resolutions may find incentive in a $1,000 cash prize. The City of New Smyrna Beach will kick off its 4th annual Mayor’s Fitness Challenge.

“This is a fun way for people to get into better shape and have fun with a group of others who are doing the same thing,” said Liz Yancey, City of New Smyrna Beach events manager.
 
On the first night, participants take part in a seminar that will help them to be successful in the program, Yancey said. Boot camp classes will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. The Saturday events are a sampling of various types of cardiovascular exercise.
The 10-week self-improvement contest is designed to motivate participants to improve their overall wellness.
Baseline measurements will be taken on each person’s blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, body fat and body weight. Those measurements will be repeated March 12-13 at the end of the Challenge.
 
A $1,000 cash prize will be awarded to the male and female who show the most fitness improvement at the end of the challenge.
 
“The contest is based on overall improvement from the initial assessment not how good someone looks,” Yancey said. “That $1,000 prize can be quite an incentive. But it’s the camaraderie and the fact that people begin to feel and look better that keeps them motivated.”
 
The $110 entry fee covers assessments, seminars, 10 boot camp classes, and 10 Saturday events.
 
Advanced registration is suggested but is not required. Applications are online.
 
This year, the City has teamed with PHIT America to promote increasing physical activity and fitness. According to the organization’s website, PHIT America has more than 140 companies and organizations working together to accomplish its mission to “help Americans to be more active, playing more sports, and being fit resulting in a more healthy life.”

Kicking off the Southeast Volusia Chamber Challenge 5k Run/Walk

The gauntlet has been laid down… metaphorically speaking of course! Coming Thursday, April 4th at 5:30pm is the inaugural Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce Corporate/Chamber Challenge 5 K Race! The race will begin and end at the Historic Chamber building at 115 Canal Street in Downtown New Smyrna Beach. It’s course consists of 3.1 miles around Historic Canal Street and Riverside Drive on a Fast Flat USATF Certified 5k Course with official timing by Racesmith.

This will be one of the most fun and exciting road races run in Volusia County in 2013!  Why?  We expect up to 1,000 runners from all over Florida. The Chamber Cup and a Corporate Cup will be awarded to the top respective team and BRAGGING RIGHTS are definitely at stake here.  The custom designed Cups will be held by the winning teams for a year and then defended in next year’s race. There is no other race like this in Volusia County and we expect a lot of runners.

Registration is available online at www.register.racesmith.com. Cost is $25 for preregisters and $30 on the day of. 100% of the proceeds from this event are dedicated to the Southeast Volusia Building Fund to continue restorations of the 1933 Historic building.
