Updating the City’s Economic Development Plan is a priority for New Smyrna Beach leaders. To garner input from stakeholders, the City is hosting its 2nd Economic Development Summit from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 2, in City Commission Chambers at New Smyrna Beach City Hall, 210 Sams Avenue. Amy Evancho, President and CEO of the Florida Economic Development Council, Inc., will be the keynote speaker and is expected to discuss trends to stimulate and maintain economic viability. The public is encouraged to attend this free event.
The 2nd Water-Wise Garden Fair will be from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday March 2, in the Utilities Commission parking lot, 200 Canal Street, New Smyrna Breach. Gardeners may learn how to conserve water in the landscape. More than 25 cold-tolerant, low maintenance plants, trees and shrubs will be on display. Local merchants will join the Utilities Commission to paint rain barrels for display outside their businesses. Barrels will be raffle prizes.
As the City of New Smyrna Beach continues to prepare an application for a new community redevelopment district, a series of stakeholder meetings are scheduled to solicit input from those who may benefit from the district. Meetings are scheduled Tuesday, March 5, in New Smyrna Beach City Hall Commission Chambers, 210 Sams Avenue, New Smyrna Beach. Meeting times are 9 – 10 a.m., 1- 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. The proposed CRA includes US 1 from just north of the municipal airport to the southern City limits, parts of the Historic Westside Community, the Canal Street Historic District, Bert Fish Medical Center, a portion of SR 44 to include the former K-Mart building, and contiguous residential areas. Seating is limited. Reservations are suggested.
The Canal Street Cruise will be from 4-8 p.m., Saturday, March 9, along historic Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach. Sponsored by the East Coast Cruisers, the family-friendly classic car show offers food and entertainment in a historic setting.
The Cuts for Cudas III fundraiser will be from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday, March 10, near the corner of South Orange and Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach. Haircuts will be provided for a donation. The event also will include musical entertainment, food, and vendors. Cuts for Cudas III is hosted by Cudas Unhooked – a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting at-risk students at New Smyrna Beach High School.

Businesses may make the most of their time by participating in the second annual New Smyrna Beach Job Fair from 10 a.m.- 1:30 p.m., Thursday, March 14, at the Alonzo “Babe” James Community Center, 201 N. Myrtle Ave., New Smyrna Beach. Participating businesses will have the opportunity to survey a large number of job applicants quickly and inexpensively during the event. They also will be able to network with other employers and cross-promote their business. Space is first come, first served. Advanced registration is required. The cost is $20 per table. Checks and envelopes should be made out to NSB Job Fair and mailed to New Smyrna Beach CRA Office, 210 Sams Avenue.
Flagler Avenue will host its annual Spring Sidewalk Sale from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, March 16, along Flagler Avenue, New Smyrna Beach. Stroll along the seaside district and peruse sales outside the shops.
Join the Pot O’Gold treasure hunt along Flagler Avenue from 5-9 p.m., Sunday, March 17. Food, live entertainment, dancing and prizes also will be offered. For more information, please log on to www.partyonflagler.com.
The Membership Meeting will be held to vote on the slate of officers for the Board. Members are encouraged to attend and let their voices be heard. Walter Snell, the President of the Halifax Historical Museum, will be speaking after the vote.
