Mentoring Program at NSB Middle School

Here is your chance to make a difference in a child’s life. New Smyrna Beach Middle school is seeking community volunteers to participate in their mentoring program, now entering it’s 14th year. Students are referred to the program by teachers, parents, counselors or themselves, and are then matched with a mentor.

Mentors need not possess special skills or qualifications, and the school system will provide a background check, training and orientation. The only requirement is consistent time on campus, usually about an hour per week, along with an interest in the well being of our young people.

Mentors become friends, trusted listeners and a source of encouragement and support to their mentee. Mentoring a child or adolescent is a uniquely satisfying experience for everyone involved. Students in similar programs in Florida and throughout the nation have demonstrated:

  • improved grades
  • fewer behavioral referrals
  • less use of drugs and alcohol
  • a greater liklihood of graduation from high school
