Rotary Club of NSB Bridges Continents with Youth Exchange Student
Hanna Skarin, a 16 year-old youth exchange student from a small rural town of Bromma, Sweden was the guest of honor at the Rotary Club of New Smyrna Beach, her sponsoring club in the United States.
Hanna, who will be attending New Smyrna Beach High School, is one of thousands of students who travel from countries overseas to experience a full academic year in a local community high school with a host family vetted by a local Rotary club.
Known as Youth Exchange, this is a Rotary program for youth between the ages of 15 and 19 in its mission for worldwide goodwill and understanding and it is open to all high school students.
Short term exchanges of three weeks to three months are the most popular and ideal for recent high school graduates. They include home stays, tours, camps, or specialized internships.
Tammy Owens, president of the Rotary Club of New Smyrna Beach stated “one of the goals of our club is to affect the lives of the children in our community in a positive way. Hanna’s interaction with fellow students in New Smyrna Beach HS is the type of exchange that leads to cultural understanding. We are proud to have her in our midst for a whole year.”
