The 11th Annual Turtle Day celebration was held at the Marine Science Center on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Even though the release of the rehabilitated animal was canceled because it was not improving as well as the center had hoped, the festivities continued.
“The Green Turtle that we had been watching for several weeks and was improving daily, looked like it would be perfect for release on Turtle Day,” explained MSC Manager Michael Brothers. “However, the turtle is not progressing as quickly as we had hoped. We only will release a turtle when it is completely ready to go back to the wild. Unfortunately, we will have to continue to treat this turtle at the Marine Science Center and further treatment will be needed to get it ready for release.”
The attendees of Turtle Day received free admission and were greeted by several local vendors and activities. Vendors included the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, Volusia/Flagler and New Smyrna Beach Turtle Patrol, Connect Church, Volusia Recycles and several local artists.
Kids were able to participate in a turtle triage simulation, where they were each given a stuffed sea turtle and taught how the center treats injuries in a hands on activity.
