Local Church Hosts Volusia Pride Festival
On Saturday, November 10, 2012 the biggest ever Pride Festival in Volusia County was held at the United Church of Christ on Washington Street in New Smyrna Beach.
The event was a complete success and featured live entertainment, local vendors, raffles and educational speakers in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community.
Originally, the festival was supposed to be held at the Riverside Park in Daytona Beach, but the rental fees were too high for the newly formed organization to afford. That is when the United Church of Christ, who recently started accepting LGBTQ members, stepped up and offered the use of their property free of charge.
The church stands by their mission to “love all” stating, “No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are always welcome here.”
According to VolusiaPride.org their organization “was formed in 2012 by a small group of local students with a common goal of encouraging people to be proud of who they are. We hope to do that by collaborating with local and LGBTQ businesses and organizations to raise awareness and educate the community on important LGBTQ issues in our area.”
Volusia Pride and the United Church of Christ will continue to grow together as the church has offered a room to host the organizations weekly event planning meetings every Thursday at 7:oo PM.
