Women Unite to Eliminate Poverty

Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, the fourth annual National Women Build Week, sponsored by Lowe’s, challenges women to devote at least one day between April 30 and May 8 to the effort to eliminate poverty housing.

Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity will participate in this event on Wednesday, May 8 at the Florez family home.  Work will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at noon.  If there are enough volunteers, there will be a second shift from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. We expect a good turnout for work this day – led by New Smyrna Beach Vice-Mayor Judy Reiker.

Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build, underwritten by Lowe’s, recruits, educates and nurtures women to build—and advocate for—simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities.

Poverty housing is a severe threat to children’s health, growth and potential. According to the Census Bureau, in the United States more than 12 million children—one out of every six—is living in poverty.

Women have the capability and determination necessary to build Habitat for Humanity houses, addressing the problem of substandard housing in a concrete way so that families have safe, decent and affordable homes.  More than 1,800 Women Build houses have been built since this program began in 1998.

Lowe’s is a national partner with Habitat for Humanity International. By 2013, Lowe’s will have contributed nearly $40 million to Habitat’s work, as well as in-store how-to clinics and volunteer labor.

Lowe’s is providing a $5,000 grant in support of the one-day Women Build.

Women interested in participating in this event should contact Joyce Riddel, Development Manager, at 386-314-6543.
